Benefits of turmeric

Though it may be best known for spicing Indian curry or its brilliant yellow color, turmeric is also arguably the most powerful know medicinal herb. Made from the dried ground rhizome of a plant turmeric has a high curcumin content that provides many health benefits. Studies have shown turmeric to be helpful with arthritis pain management, fighting inflammation, cardiac health, fighting diabetes, and much more.  Modern medicine has just begun to recognize the importance of turmeric, but it has been used medicinally by our ancestors for centuries.

Turmeric can be used in cooking and comes in supplement forms like capsules containing powder, tincture, and fluid extract.

1. Use black pepper with turmeric to dramatically increase effects and absorption. 

2. It’s great when added alone to roasted veggies, meats, soups, eggs, and barbeque.

3. It’s a cold remedy when added to honey (preferably local honey).

4. Can be added to homemade soaps, and provide natural skin benefits.

5. Bromelain is often combined with turmeric products because it increases the anti-inflammatory effects and absorption of curcumin.

6.  Can boost immune health.

 

Practical Use/Recipe:

Turmeric Tea Recipe

Prep time: 5 min. Cook time: 20 min. Total time: 25 min.

 Ingredients

·         1 pinch nutmeg

·         1 pinch clove

·         1 tsp cinnamon

·         1 tsp ginger

·         1tsp agave nectar

·         a teaspoon or more turmeric

·         1-2c cups water

·         Honey to sweeten to taste

·         Milk substitute of choice (coconut, almond, hemp etc.)

·         Pinch of fresh ground black pepper (optional)

·         Pinch of cayenne (optional)

 Cooking Instructions

Blender

1.       Add boiled water to blender.

2.      Add in spices and blend until you see a smooth and unified color.

3.      Strain out tea and add honey and milk.

** Blenders with gradual speed increase will reduce likelihood of pressure from the steam of boiled water building up in or exploding out of your blender.

Stove Top

1.       Simmer herbs in water for 10 min.

2.      Strain out.

3.      Add honey and milk and ENJOY!!
