Healthcare that supports the whole person

What is Functional Nutrition?

A personalized, root-cause approach to optimizing health and longevity. Symptoms are not random, they are the body’s way of communicating that something is out of balance. Instead of silencing these signals, the goal of functional medicine is to better understand why these symptoms are occurring and how we restore function long-term.

All systems and organs in the body work together. In functional nutrition, we help connect the dots between symptoms or conditions that may seem unrelated, but are often deeply connected.

Beyond the Lab Range

How is it different?

Traditional medical care is especially important for diagnosing and treating disease, managing medications, providing acute care, and identifying serious health conditions.

However, there are many individuals who are looking to promote health, performance, and longevity, in which the traditional health care system does not have options to help support.

Often, individuals may be told that their labs are “normal” or “within range,” however they do not feel well. Or, they may be told that there is no answer until a lab value moves far enough out of range that it can be diagnosed as a disease or condition.

A functional medicine healing approach starts with the foundations. We emphasize the importance of nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and relationships. We take the time to understand your daily habits and what may be impacting how you feel.

Depending on your individual needs, recommendations may include changes to diet, exercise and activity intensity, sleep or lifestyle habits, or targeted supplementation when appropriate.

Why functional medicine matters

This model of care is particularly valuable for patients who:

Chiropractic care supports the structure of the body through adjustments. Functional medicine addresses the internal environment. Combining the two allows us to support both the structure and function of the body, creating a more complete pathway to optimizing health and longevity.

What to Expect

Your path, step by step

No 1

Complete Intake Forms

We will send you paperwork to fill out prior to the initial appointment. These forms may be extensive, but we ask that you fill them out to the best of your ability. We ask that you complete the forms at least one week prior to your initial appointment so Dr. Katie is able to review them and create a thoughtful, personalized plan to be discussed with you. Topics that we may discuss include health history, current concerns, nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, exercise, medications, supplements, and what success looks like to you.

Initial Appointment, 60 minutes

Complete Lab Testing, if needed

We will guide you through the process of lab testing, whether that be blood, urine, or stool test. Once your lab tests are available, Dr. Katie will review them in detail. She will then reach out to schedule an appointment to review the findings and outline next steps.

Frequently asked questions

My labs are normal, but I don’t feel like myself. Why?

“Normal” does not always mean “optimal.” Standard lab ranges are based on broad population averages and are designed to identify disease, not optimal function. It is possible to fall within a “normal” range while still experiencing symptoms. Functional medicine evaluates labs through a more refined lens, identifying subtle imbalances and looking at trends that may impact how you feel on a daily basis.

Why aren’t these tests done in my annual physical?

In conventional healthcare, testing is often dependent on diagnostic criteria and insurance guidelines. This means that testing may not be ordered until symptoms become more severe or can be “diagnosed” as a particular condition or disease. Unfortunately, this can leave deeper imbalances unnoticed or let early issues become deeper concerns down the road.

What kind of testing can be done with functional medicine?
